This cartoon was taken from a great little book entitled: "The Happiest Baby on the Block" by Dr. Harvey Karp. It made me smile as I realized this is pretty much what we fall in love with when a new baby is brought into our lives...: )

I perused this book by Dr. Karp and really liked what he had to say. He gives suggestions on how to calm your crying baby and help them sleep longer.

One of the keys is "swaddling" your baby.

Now, this is a relatively new concept to me in that "in my day" (Oh Lord, did I just say that?) we put our baby to sleep on their tummy and then placed a little blanket over them.

Today's moms are taught to tightly (and I mean tightly!) wrap up their baby in the blanket so that their arms and legs are restrained. This keeps them from flailing about and disrupting their sleep.

I am a believer in that I see how it totally calms Celia to be wrapped up in this way. It allows her to peacefully sleep for long periods of time.

Now, truth be told, it does get some getting used to in that she looks a bit like a baby burrito!

But, it made me think that we adults could learn something from this. Maybe we could get swaddled before going to sleep at night.

Sounds good to me...what do you think?

That is so interesting, isn't it. Yes, in our day...LOL. We are becoming our mothers, aren't we.

I remember seeing Ella like that and thinking it would drive me crazy. I guess it must give them the sense of being in the womb? Is that the reason?

How much longer are you there?

But we'd need a "swaddler'! Sounds good to me and make sense about the ars and legs flailing.

Dear Grammie,

Thank you so much for mentioning "The Happiest Baby on the block". Dr. Karp's work has helped countless parents calm their baby's "fussies" and instantly boost their sleep.

Besides the book, Dr. Karp strongly recommends "The Happiest Baby" DVD. It is the easiest way for busy moms - and dads and grandparents - to learn to do the 5 S's perfectly!

Also, do you know about our "Super-Soothing" Sleep Sounds CD? It has specially engineered white noise that can calm crying babies and - when played all night - can instantly boost sleep by 1-3 hours. Dr. Karp recommends it to help sleep for at least the first year (it's so comforting to little kids....like an auditory "teddy bear"). Parents love this CD because it’s super easy to control the volume and wean babies off of (whenever they want), it keeps babies calm on car rides, and helps them sleep when spending the night at grandma's.

Pretty soon you and your family will also want to watch Dr. Karp's "The Happiest Toddler" DVD. It does for toddlers (8-months to 5-years) what "The Happiest Baby" does for babies! It teaches simple techniques that greatly reduce tantrums and help kids be more patient and cooperative. Parents usually watch the DVD 2-3 times - to learn the techniques - then read the book for lots more tips (like dealing with picky eating, whining and discipline).

I hope this helps!
