Heading to Pittsburgh...

Tomorrow morning Dave and I will be winging our way to Pennsylvania as his niece will be getting married this weekend. Weddings are such a joyful time and I am looking forward to celebrating this happy occasion with him and his family.

Having never been to Pittsburgh, I look forward to getting to see some of this city. When I first moved to Birmingham, it was called "The Pittsburgh of the South" because the steel industry was such an integral part of our economy.

Unfortunately, that type of commerce also brought about a great deal of pollution...another trait that we shared with Pittsburgh. We have certainly 'cleaned up our act' here in Birmingham as I am sure they have done there. It will be interesting to see how this city has grown and prospered.

Birmingham's working population has moved from being a predominately blue collar town into a white collar city with new industries such as our ever-growing University of Alabama Medical Center. It has been cited many times as one of the "best" medical centers and is on the cutting edge of many new medical studies and research.

Here in Birmingham we are still haunted by our troubled past as far as race relations are concerned. As soon as anything happens in the world concerning black-white issues, the horrific pictures of the dogs and hoses are shown all over the television. It has taken a lot of hard work and education, but Birmingham has, thankfully, come a long way in that regard. There is always more work to be done...but, the changes and atmosphere here are much, much different than what was found in the 60's.

I always say that Birmingham is the country's best kept secret. It really is a lovely place to live as it is filled with warm, friendly people and beautiful rolling hills.

No, I don't work for the Chamber of Commerce...I just love it here and I am proud of the strides that we have made to be better. : )

My blogging may be limited while I am away this weekend, but hopefully I will come back with some great pictures and stories.

To all of my old (and new!) 'blogging buddies"....Have a great weekend!
