Running for Cover!

As we left Lexington yesterday and headed toward Louisville, we were filled with anticipation for the ladies race, The Oaks.

Dave and his friend, Dean, had purchased some very good seats right at the turn of the track, friends brought us lovely box lunches, and we were dressed for the occasion...including our Derby hats.

Unfortunately, Mother Nature wasn't in on our plans as the sky opened up right as we approached Churchill Downs!

So, we began to eat our lunches right there in the car...and began to hand out ponchos to everyone in case we decided to make a run for it...which we eventually did.

We found our seats (they were great!) and sat in our ponchos getting drenched for several minutes until the lightning and thunder began. At that point...we all took cover under the overhang where hundreds of other fans were assembling!

We never went back to our seats as the rain never really stopped.

BUT...we still had a great time in spite of the conditions.

The first race that we were there for had a filly named "Giant Gizmo"...well, those of you who follow my blog know that Gizmo was the name of my beloved cat who passed away.

Giant Gizmo was a 30-1 longshot...but I bet on her anyway.

And, she came in first!!!!! It was only a two dollar bet, but I walked away with $12 and a big smile on my face...

Thanks, Giz... : )
