"What a lady!"...In memory of "Eight Belles"

Through all of the fun, excitement, and celebration of the Kentucky Derby...the tragic loss of the filly, Eight Belles, is what, unfortunately, stays utmost in our minds.

This beautiful horse ran the race of her life as she found her way through the large group of stallions and managed to finish in second place right behind the powerhouse, Big Brown.

After crossing the finish line and slowing down...she suddenly collapsed as both ankles broke causing the vets to immediately euthanize her to put her out of her intense pain.

Heartbreaking beyond belief.

Controversy abounds right now about Eight Belles and whether or not she should have even been in this race...whether she was really strong enough to run the derby, whether fillies should be running against the stronger, more powerful stallions, etc. Fingers are being pointed at the jockey, the trainer, and the owner...even though I am sure that they are all suffering beyond our comprehension right now at this horrific turn of events.

We may never have a definitive answer as to how and why this shocking ending occurred...but, I say...please, let this valiant filly be remembered for her heart and courage....

...and, may she rest in peace.
